Out In The Streets Festival comes to Ridgewood, Queens on 7/16 and 7/17

Whoever said Queens isn’t cool (hey! it's the new Brooklyn!) surely must not have heard of the Out In The Streets Festival coming to the Onderdonk House in Ridgewood for its fourth year on July 16-17.  Filled with some of our favorite local artists, such as The So So Glos and Frankie Rose, the festival is primarily a rock'n'roll fest. Bands will be playing with a backdrop of art, food and the Ridgewood market.  We’ve prepared a playlist to give a taste of the artists playing this weekend, but be sure to head over to the Out In The Streets festival to hear them for yourself. - Madeleine Grossman

Three punky NYC bands at Shea Stadium on 05.05: Big Ups, Dirty Dishes and Washer

Slacking noise lovers shouldn't miss this show at Shea Stadium on 05.05, since it features threee NYC bands with a noisy sound and a slacking attitude. Post-hardcore quartet Big Ups - our Best NYC Emerging Band of 2014 - will headline the bill and kick off a three date north east tour in support of their recent release 'Before a Million Universes.'  Their label mates, slacker rockers Washer will be one of the opening acts; after releasing a split EP with Big Ups in 2014, this past January released their debut album 'Here Comes Washer.' on the bill also noise rock purveyors Dirty Dishes, who recently expanded to a trio (picture) and released a new single in February entitled "All of Me" (streaming) and spent the early spring touring the East coast.

Don't Miss Big Ups and Boytoy tonight at Baby's All Right (04.09)

NYC punk lovers should not miss tonight's show at Baby's All Right with last year's Deli Artist of the Year - the post-hardcore madmen Big Ups - and super talented garage poppers Boytoy, a female fronted trio with Australian roots that manages to merge influences as disparate as shoegaze and surf. They will be opening for Nashville's Turbo Fruits. We actually booked both bands last year at the punk stage of our NYC B.E.A.F. (Best of Emerging Artists Fest), which by the way will be back this year, again during the Northside Festival. Check out a recent single by Big Ups and an older song by Boytoy below.

Weekly Feature: Big Ups tour Europe

Jam bands, improvisational music classes and Philip Glass’ five-hour opera “Einstein on the Beach” are just a few of the unexpected influences cited by The Deli's Best of NYC Emerging Band of 2013 - i.e. punk outfit Big Ups, who graced the cover of our spring 2014 issue. In fact, the group - known for chaotic live performances and a sound that recalls classic 80s hardcore and 90s post-hardcore - are not hesitant to admit that some of them used to listen to Phish or that they don’t really consider themselves a punk band. The band is currently touriong Europe, which has so far been more receptive to their sound than their home country.

Eula celebrates EP Release at Palisades on 07.31 with Big Ups, Courtship Ritual and Pile

Eula is bringing us an insane lineup for their EP release party tomorrow night (07.31).  On the bill they have New England rockers, Pile, and the current Deli's band of the year, Big Ups.  Opening up is Courtship Ritual, whose debut album, Pith, is a promising work of dark bedroom pop.  Simple harmonies combined with unexpected warbly guitar hooks provide an interesting combination; it's as if slacker-rock met L.A. pop and had a baby in Brooklyn. The show is at Palisades this Thursday (7/31) - check out Courtship Ritual single 'Ancient Drip' below. - Jake Saunders
