New Music Video: "Nothing" - Grandchildren

Grandchildren crafts complex orchestral pop utilizing a diverse instrumental toolbox. The band’s new album ZUNI is due out via Ernest Jenning Record Co. on August 28. This video of “Nothing” retains an inherent vibrancy despite drifting momentarily in a gloomy direction. Catch their album release show August 28 at Johnny Brenda’s with Spaceship Aloha and White Bike.

Weekend Warrior, June 6 - 8

Over the past few years Dock Street Brew Pub has been wrapping up Philly Beer Week in style with an always well-attended music festival that has featured the likes of The Extraordinaires, Skeletonbreath, Bardo Pond, and Stinking Lizaveta. This Sunday the festival returns with a lineup that hosts an eclectic dose of jazzy orchestral pop, Eastern European folk, and stoney hip hop, all while staying true to the fest’s West Philly roots. Grandchildren are no strangers to performing at the Dock Street Festival. However, the last time they played was before they released the tight melodic beats of their last opus Golden Age. West Philadelphia Orchestra will be bringing the good vibes with their multiple horns and Balkan dance beats. And while he may be the younger cousin of Questlove, Gliss has come into his own, and impressed with tracks like “Inner Visions”and “Same Shit,”and he should be the perfect way to round out this diverse lineup. Add in plenty of wood-fired pizzas, brews like Pimp My Rye, and a ton of outdoor games, and you have the perfect way to end Philly Beer Week in style. Dock Street Brewery, 701 S. 50th St., 2pm, Free, All Ages - Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, April 25 - 27

Tonight, we’ll be presenting the final show of Night Panther’s residency at Bourbon & Branch, and we might have saved the best for last! If you caught any of the run so far, then you know that our favorite sex-pop group are at the top of their game so panties will be dropping. They’ll be bringing along West Philly’s favorite sons Grandchildren and Doylestown pals Commonwealth Choir for the ride. And if that wasn’t badass enough, experimental-pop duo Pattern is Movement has been announced as the  very special guest for this evening. Yeah, there is a lot going on in Philly this evening, but trust me when I say, “Nothing else happening tonight matters.” BTW: If you don’t have your tix already, then you better get there early! Weekend Warrior, December 27 - 29

So I’ve been really looking forward to attending this weekend’s Weekend Warrior pick. Not only is it a sweet, stacked, locals-only lineup this Saturday with Grandchildren, Night Panther and Purples (ex-Teeth), but it will also take place in my favorite sounding room in Philly, The Boot and Saddle. (Sorry folks, sounds like there might be a new sheriff in town so it might be time for other venues to step up their game.) You should already know how great Grandchildren and Night Panther are live on stage from our anniversary showcases. And older heads (in the know) might still remember how The Teeth helped Philly build its reputation as a “hot” music scene (well, according to Rolling Stone many moons ago) before the floodgates opened. Don’t sleep on this one! You don’t want to leave 2013 like that because I know you’re better than that. The Boot and Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 9pm, $10, 21+ - Q.D. Tran
