Dave Cantrell knows what's good when it comes to post-punk. As Portland's resident cognoscente of dark sounds, Cantrell has shared his knowledge regarding the peak of the genre's original years, from 1977 to 1983, as well as on present-day synthwave, darkwave and post-punk through his leading source of a radio show, Songs From Under the Floorboard. This weekly space has been turned into a compilation album, and it's coming out right in time to pair with the fourth year of Cantrell's curated festival Out From the Shadows.

Out on a split between local labels Accident Prone and Green Noise Records, the Songs From Under the Floorboard comp highlights just a few of the amazing artists Cantrell has discovered so far from around the globe, including Spain and Germany. The tracks on the compilation are rare and previously unreleased, the proceeds from what hopefully will be the first of many being donated to Planned Parenthood. As far as local representation is concerned, trio Vice Device are the only Portlanders on this volume of the comp, but there are quite a few named on the Out From the Shadows' bill.

Ritual Veil has been blowing up the scene lately and is expected to take the stage, along with the anarco-death rock of Over and the punk wave sounds of Arctic Flowers. Vibrissae's shoegazey synth sounds, some electro-industrial feels from Die Robot and some classic, gritty post-punk from Deathcharge.

 Harsh noise enthusiasts rejoice, as today a 4-way split from some of the most deft musicians in that genre field. Featuring dynamically skilled artist Aaron Turner (Sumac, Old Man Gloom, Isis) and Faith Coloccia of Seattle's Mamiffer as House of Low Culture, Daniel Menche, Andrea K.'s of Vice Device solo project Caustic Touch and EMS, the split showcases each artists' ability to make even the most grating of sounds appealing.

Each artist got at least one track on the split, but Caustic Touch surely commanded much of the album having contributed three. The album carries itself almost like a grating tale, with House of Low Culture's "The Pervasive Mind" as the album's exposition, Caustic Touch's "Desiccating Wind" beginning the rising action, "Is She Ectoplasm?" by Daniel Menche as the falling action, and "Hierarchy of Bodies" by EMS ending it as the resolution.

There's a beauty to its discordance that makes the album gripping. What will be even more interesting to see is how each of these artist's translates these tracks into live performances. See how each of them does it at the release show for the split tonight 12.15 at Modular 8.

Round 2 of Not Without A Fight II is here, our gathering to go against all of the political b.s. as of late. Even today's events act as proof that we need a bit more common decency in the world for sure, but definitely on a much more local level here.

That's why tonight's bill of this show boasts an entertaining bunch of garage rock punk from Bobby Peru, post-punk from famed Vice Device, queer feminist punk leaders Cockeye and Escort from Washington. We wish there were more days of this installment but it's easy to see that there will be much more to come.

Even though spring is trying to add little pops of color to our lives with flowers and five seconds worth of blue skies, the dark tendencies of post punk are still the most appealing. Thankfully, there's a new act on the scene to help fulfill our needs.

New electronic/anarcho/post-punk duo Fleshh... just dropped their debut in early March, and it's already catching attention left and right. Vocalist and synth player Tim Iserman describes the sounds he makes with drummer Mark Onyx as being "early George Michael meets late stage Morrissey" with a bit of Fad Gadget. That designation is incredibly fitting, as it's stripped down and minimal while still holding its intrigue. A nice blend of droney noise, electro beats and a subdued vocals, it's exciting to see what they'll be releasing next.

Catch Fleshh... TONIGHT at Dante's with Terror Apart, Caustic Touch and Contact Cult or with Italy's Horror Vacui and locals Vice Device, Bellicose Minds and Vacant Stares on 5/6 at Black Water.

Vice Device tread a line between the post-punk and industrial genres, crafting dark and addictive soundscapes through synthesized tones, drum machines and driving bass riffs. The vocals are equally soothing and aggressive, as male and female voices pass lyrics back and forth through a primarily melancholy backdrop. This combination of sounds results in music that can move and break a listener in the same moment. Vice Device will be celebrating their latest release, a split 12” with Philadelphia-based Void Vision, at Rotture this Thursday night with Arctic Flowers, Industrial Park and DJ Musique Plastique.
