Whoever said Queens isn’t cool (hey! it's the new Brooklyn!) surely must not have heard of the Out In The Streets Festival coming to the Onderdonk House in Ridgewood for its fourth year on July 16-17.  Filled with some of our favorite local artists, such as The So So Glos and Frankie Rose, the festival is primarily a rock'n'roll fest. Bands will be playing with a backdrop of art, food and the Ridgewood market.  We’ve prepared a playlist to give a taste of the artists playing this weekend, but be sure to head over to the Out In The Streets festival to hear them for yourself. - Madeleine Grossman

Hot on the heels of a series of West Coast dates supporting the Buzzcocks and with The Deli Philly’s May Record of the Month, Love Songs, still fresh in our minds, Residuels hits the stage this evening at Boot & Saddle to celebrate the release of their new 7" "Ordinary" via Born Losers Records, the trio provides an unwavering, primal, garage-rock rumble that's unfiltered, hitting unapologetically, grabbing the wheel, and daring you to hold on. However, not one but two 7” will be commemorated on this night. With vinyl copies of “Out in the Streets”/“Miles Around” (issued via Hidden Volume Records) in hand, the all-female quartet of Louie Louie dose out garage rock with a psych-pop twist. Rolling forward in a determined drive, while also exhibiting a smooth soothing side, the band demonstrates compelling control. The heady cruising psych-rock of Weekender completes this billing. Creative compatriots Michael Cammarata (Residuels) and Chris Radwanski (having worked together in Night Panther, White Birds and Suburban Living) continue their collaborative endeavors, forming a new record label Born Losers Records. Later this week, Residuels set out on a stretch of West Coast tour dates supporting The Buzzcocks. Meanwhile, the label’s inaugural release, a 7” of the band’s new single “Ordinary,” can be purchased HERE, and will be officially released on Friday, May 13. Listen to the single below, and catch Residuels as they cap off their tour with a dual release show with Louie Louie on Friday, June 3 at Boot & Saddle (which will also be opened by Weekender). 

Director Jay Yachetta captures a panoramic perspective in Weekender’s new music video for the title-track off their latest EP Floaty Feeling, Blue (PaperCup Music). It utilizes textures of illumination as well as the broader picture to create a pleasant pensive state. Editor Ryan Putnam challenges the natural vibrancy, when an intense tonal change briefly triggers warping/curving of the imagery. The band will be performing in Philly on Saturday, July 9 at Johnny Brenda’s.

There is always an elusive, transcendent quality to any good psychedelic music that can be placed somewhere on the scale between body and head. Weekender find themselves decisively on the heady side of the spectrum. Their use of atmospheric pads and effects, woven together with fluid guitars and effortless melodies, makes the world briefly seem like an okay place. The instruments blend and whirl together (with plenty of help from reverb and modulation), producing astoundingly soft and nebulous textures that can’t help but draw comparisons to Slowdive and other shoegazing pioneers, who bring heavenly atmospherics to the big stage. These 90s shoegazers were probably also a large influence on some of today’s artists like Tame Impala and Temples, who conveniently fit nicely into the same vein of glazed over, impossibly poppy, happy-high psych rock that Weekender puts out. You can catch Weekender live this evening at Johnny Brenda’s when they celebrate the arrival of their new album Floaty, Feeling Blue (PaperCup Music), alongside Vanillalord (part goth, part gunk, part bad trip, 100% weirdo-rock) and dream-pop labelmates Little Racer, with the Suburban Living DJs spinning tasty vinyl throughout the night.
