Visual Vices: Shenandoah Davis - "The Wings"

Like a beautiful instrument itself, Shenandoah Davis' classically trained voice is dynamic yet welcoming, making it an integral part of the orchestral pop she's been making the last few years. Now on her third full-length album, the Plume Records released Souvenirs, Davis has taken her astute way with words and turned it even more inward with the at home recordings that make the album. The songs have lyrical themes rooted in past relationships and lessons learned through personal experiences; "The Wings" is one paired with a well-crafted video.

Other tracks on Souvenirs sonically hit elements of doo-wop and the instrumetnally experimental, but "The Wings" is a chamber-meets-indie pop track with the slightest bit of a rock influence that is a good peek at the others. Her acute lyrics and jaunty vocal tones are visually accompanied by a mixture of digital compositing and stop motion animation for "The Wings" video, making it not only pleasant to the ears but to the eyes as well.

Piano duo St. Dawn in Slumber debut their dreamy EP

Nashville's Isaac (The Arcadian Wild) and Ella Horn met through a musical conversation discussed through the voices of two pianos in adjacent practice rooms, leading to marriage a few months later and beautiful music they are now sharing with the world. As st. dawn in slumber, an instrumental piano outfit, the couple is releasing their debut EP,  My Heart Awakened in a Dream, via Vohnic Music. With this effort, and future EPs already in the works, the Horns hope to "create space for rest and reflection" through "a collection of soothing, evocative piano pieces that we could use to sweet-talk sleep and to charm ourselves awake." If you're looking for music for late night meditation, look no further. - Chris Thiessen

Woodpainting's surprising and luscious avant-folk

On first listen, Woodpainting's music is very difficult to wrap your head around. Their track "A Hot Gust of Wind" (streaming below) darts back and forth between rhythms, drifts up and down in dynamic range, crashes, bangs, strums... Woodpainting describe themselves as "a grand multimedia narrative work, an infectious bubblegum-pop melodrama, a lyrical folk opera, a pan-idiomatic chamber piece, an anachronistic daytime-soap, and a rock epic." All of those things are probably true. But what you should cling to are the juicy guitar licks and soaring drums, especially on "Danse Macabre," which drifts into a slightly more atmospheric soundscape. The second you decide to simply let the music wash over you is the moment when it becomes a blissful concoction of sound. -Geena Kloeppel

THIS SATURDAY! Deli sponsored LPR's Mini-Fest "Rubblebucket Dream Picnic" at the Knockdown Center

(Le) Poisson Rouge is known for bringing eclectic NYC artists together, and their upcoming, Deli sponsored, mini-festival “Rubblebucket Dream Picnic" keeps faith to this trend. The show gets its name from its headliner and curator of this event, Rubblebucket, a funkadelic, uber-fun pop band led by an ensemble of experienced multi-instrumentalists originally from "Jam Band State" (Vermont). Joining the group are other NYC acts with a similar flair for the fun and groovy: Delicate Steve, Alexander F., and Kalbells (check them all out in the event's playlist, streaming below). More than just this exciting lineup, the Rubblebucket Dream Picnic is an all-ages event starting at 3pm that promises a variety of games and food as well as yoga, special guest DJs and... DELI MAGAZINES!!! It's a great way to escape the city without traveling too far on one of the last warm weekends of the year, on 09.30 at Richmond's Knockdown Center - there will be a shuttle taking you there from the Cobra Club Bar every 15 minutes, see you there! - Amanda Ogea
